Would the NFL Benefit With a Developmental League?
The NFL is the only league out of the big four American sports leagues (MLB, NBA, NHL, NFL) to not have a minor league affiliate or a developmental league.
The NFL could have more success on the monastery side with a developmental league, they already have designated teams and fan bases that could support team affiliates, they wouldn’t need to build new stadiums or facilities, and they wouldn’t need to worry about building team identity.
Many people worry that if the NFL were to have and affiliated league that no one would watch it, as if the NFL wasn’t on, people will just watch college, but there is one day a week when there is no college or professional football being played. If this hypothetical minor league only played on Wednesdays they would have to worry about competing with other games to be seen on television as no one else plays on a Wednesday.
But the most important question to NFL executives, is it profitable? Yes. The MLB on average generates 25 million dollars a year from their minor league teams and the NHL makes between 10-15 million a year in revenue, and for the NBA does not publicly disclose the G Leagues revenue. But if the NFL were to follow these patterns they should have extra slots for teams to put players and develop them and an extra source to generate revenue.
